Ayurveda recommends proper treatment; diet and herbs to cure the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The main Ayurvedic treatment is explained below:

  • Ayurvedic detox (panchakarma)

In Ayurvedic medicine, Panchakarma is called a bio-purification method. It is an effective treatment for managing fibromyalgia. This form of treatment detoxifies and rejuvenates the body. As a result, patients often develop a stronger immune system and restore balance throughout the doshas.

Panchakarma treatment consists of three main processes, such as preparing the body, releasing and eliminating the impurities, and rejuvenating the tissues. The main ayurvedic detox includes purgation therapy (cleansing of the upper gut) and enema (cleansing of the lower gut). To prepare the tissues for mobilizing and releasing the toxins, you begin by taking medicated ghee at home. The ghee enters every cell of your body and works as a carrier to move the toxins from your tissues into the digestive tract where they are expelled. Treatments include ayurvedic massage with herbal oil (abhyanga), nervous system treatment (Shirodhara), herbal paste massage udvartana, full-body herbal steam bath (swedana), and medicated enemas (Basti).

As the toxins move out of the tissues and into the alimentary canal, the treatments focus on removing them from the bowel. When your panchakarma is complete, your tissues and digestive tract will feel clean and new. After that doctor will prescribe a healthy diet and lifestyle to rebuild your tissue strength and immunity.

  • Diet Recommendation

One of the causes of fibromyalgia is improper digestion. Some foods when you eat disturb Vata and thereby aggravate fibromyalgia symptoms, including increased sensitivity to pain. So Ayurvedic doctors will prescribe the foods that can be easily digested, creating micronutrients that can assimilate into the tissues and rebuild tissue strength.

The diet may be a Vata-pacifying diet. It includes:

    • Vegetable soups.
    • Coconut water and coconut milk.
    • The fresh drink is made from carrot juice.
    • Cooked vegetables include squash, zucchini, sweet potato, tomato, and pumpkin.
    • Foods spiced with cumin, coriander, fennel, black pepper, ginger, asafoetida, garlic, and turmeric.
    • Moderate quantities of green salads with simple dressings of lemon juice, olive oil, and a pinch of salt.
    • Kichari (recipe made by cooking white basmati rice and moong dhal and spices).
    • Warm milk with warming spices including cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and clove.
  • Foods to Avoid.

Some of the food items that should be avoided by Fibromyalgia patients are:

  • Hot (spicy) and fried foods.
  • Processed sugar.
  • Bitter and astringent foods such as brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, kohlrabi, and potatoes.
  • Raw foods.
  • High levels of black tea, coffee, alcohol, yogurt, chocolate, and cocoa.

The main treatment for fibromyalgia is Panchakarma. It detoxifies and rejuvenates the body. The main stages of Panchakarma treatment are abhyanga, Shirodhara, udvartana, swedana, and vasti. Along with Ayurveda treatment, Ayurvedic doctors prescribe diet recommendations also.
