The fundamental process of our existence is dependent on the purity of our blood, and Ayurveda suggests the following procedures to treat blood disorders.
- Purgation therapy (Virechana)
Virechana is the administration of purgative substances for cleansing of pitta through the lower pathways. Virechana purifies blood toxins that have accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. The liver and spleen are the main organs that produce rakta dhatu. So this Ayurvedic therapy cleanses the gastrointestinal tract.
- Therapeutic fasting (Langhana)
The purpose of this treatment is to make the body light by relieving heaviness. Through this process, the body gets a chance to detoxify itself. Thus it rests the digestive system.
- Bloodletting therapy (Raktamokshana)
Bloodletting therapy helps to detoxify the body, providing immunity-boosting and enhanced blood circulation. It supports the elimination of toxins from the body. Traditionally bloodletting was done with the use of leeches.
