Introduction of Gajpippali (Gajpipal)

It is a large epiphytic climber, found all along the sub-Himalayan tract between an altitude of 330–1000 m in West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, and the Andaman Islands. Fruit occurs in transversely cut circular pieces of about 2.0–3.00 cm in diameter and 2.0–3.5 cm thick, brownish-gray, rough, and scaly. The cut surface has a central core surrounded by fruits enclosing the seed, partly covered by aril; odor and taste are not distinct. Seed Kidney-shaped, long, smooth, shiny, grayish-brown with a dent, odor, and taste not distinct. It is used for parasitic worms (helminths) and other internal parasites of the body, relieving or preventing dysentery, asthma, inflammation by acting on body mechanisms, pain, etc.

It is an effective remedy to prevent dysentery, reducing inflammation by acting on body mechanisms, and the leaves or fruits are applied externally for rheumatism. Gaja Pippali is available in the form of powder. The fruits are indicated for diseases that occur due to vitiation of Vata and Kapha.
