Introduction of Kakmari (Anamirta cocculus)

Kakmari is a large, dioecious climbing plant. These stems scramble over the ground and twine into other plants for support. The leaves and fruit contain picrotoxin (a powerful poison and nerve stimulant) and alkaloids. Its crushed seeds are an effective pediculicide (anti-lice) and are also traditionally used to stun fish or as a pesticide.

The fruits of the plant are used medicinally for treating several diseases. According to Ayurveda, the plant pacifies vitiated Kapha, Vata, ulcer, inflammation, chronic skin diseases, bronchitis, and cough. The powdered berries are used as an ointment for destroying lice. The juice of the fruits is applied externally to ulcers and scabies. It can be effective in treating ringworm. Fruit removes intestinal gases and is good for rheumatism. It encourages the central nervous system and respiratory center. An extract of the stem is added to native wine and is drunk to make the blood strong. The fruits and seeds are made into an ointment to treat skin diseases. It is an antidote to Morphine poisoning. It also slows the heart rate and increases blood pressure.
