Introduction of Mamira (Coptis teeta)

Mamira, also known as the golden thread herb, belongs to the family Ranunculaceae is an endangered species in India. It is recorded only from the state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is a perennial stemless herb with horizontal rootstocks and densely fibrous with yellowish-brown externally and golden-yellow internally and very bitter. The roots of the plant look like a tangled mass of gold thread, hence got the name as golden thread herb. Mamira roots are used for therapeutic benefits in Ayurveda. It is beneficial in malaria, intermittent fever, chronic fever, post fever debility, decreased functions of the stomach, and urinary infections. The main Dosha karma are-it reduces Kapha dosha, detoxifies pitta dosha, and removes ama dosha.

The plant has several medicinal uses as cough, cold, and also in backache, stomachache, cuts, wounds, dysentery, cholera, diarrhea, eye complaints, malarial fever, etc. It is also used as a general bitter tonic. It regulates blood pressure and is also helpful in anti-tumor and antibacterial activities.
Its anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and anti-malarial actions are beneficial in malaria, intermittent fever, chronic fever, post fever debility, decreased functions of the stomach, and urinary infections. Externally it is used to treat conjunctivitis, toothache, weak eyesight, pile mass, pain in nails, and skin discoloration.
