Ovaries

Ovaries are the female reproductive system that is located on the lower abdomen on both sides of the uterus. An ovarian cyst is a common health condition and they are sac-like structures that form on or within the ovary that is filled with a liquid or semi-solid substance. The cyst may be simple or complex. Cysts are complicated and come under gynaecological emergencies like haemorrhage, rupture, and torsion. Studies have shown that about 7% of the women in the world have an ovarian cyst at some point in their life. Ovarian cysts are found in 7.8% of asymptomatic fertile-aged women. Post-menopausal women exhibit a prevalence of 2.5 to 18%.

An asymptomatic ovarian cyst can be diagnosed with ultrasonography easily. According to Ayurveda, ovary cyst comes under the category of granti-aartav dosha. Aartav means ‘ovaries’ and granti means ‘cyst’. As per Ayurveda, an imbalance of tridoshas and accumulation of doshas in aartava vaha strotas causes an ovarian cyst. Ayurvedic herbal formulas given to patients suffering from ovary cysts are Sukumaram Kashayam, Guggulu, Guggulu panchapala churnam, and gomutra haritaki.
