PMS may occur due to various reasons like:

  • Depression

    In women, hormonal fluctuations are the main reason for depression. Depression is one of the main causes of severe PMS.

  • Cyclic changes in the hormone

    Hormones in women may change during pregnancy and menopause. These fluctuations lead to symptoms of PSM.

  • Chemical changes in the brain

    Serotonin hormone is directly related to the mood swings of women. Lack of sufficient hormones causes depression, irregular sleep, and fatigue, etc.

  • Low blood sugar

    Hormonal imbalances cause a high or lower level of blood glucose. Low blood sugar is the main cause of the PMS symptom.

  • Psychogenic factors

    Psychogenic factors have a direct relationship with PMS. General psychogenic factors are stress, anxiety, etc.

  • Hyperprolactinemia

    Hyperprolactinemia is a health condition in which prolactin hormone will be higher than the normal level.

  • Retention of sodium and water by the kidneys.


The notable factors that cause PMS symptoms are Hyperprolactinemia, chemical changes in the brain, depression, low blood sugar, cyclic changes in the hormone, psychogenic factors, retention of sodium and water by the kidneys, etc.
