According to Ayurveda, there are four main causes of premature graying of hair:
- Food-related (Ahara)
Excessive use of salty, sour, bitter, acidic foods in the diet leads to premature graying of hair.
- Lifestyle-related (Vihara)
Excessive exposure to sunlight, awakening during the nite, excessive exercise and upavasa (fast), use of smoking and dust particles, intake of vitiated air also cause premature graying of hair.
- Mind related (Mansik)
Anger, grief, fear, and mental stress lead to the condition.
- Unknown or Genetic (Adibalapravritta)
The basic Prakriti of an individual is genetic. One who has a Pitta-dominant innate Prakriti has a default tendency to excess heat accumulation and is more likely to undergo premature graying than others.
- Hormones
Major hormonal changes in women during conditions like pregnancy and menopause can cause premature greying. .
- Chemicals
The use of chemical hair dyes and products like shampoos may contribute to your premature graying as they contain harmful chemicals like hydrogen peroxide.
- Medical Conditions
In some medical conditions like albinism, pernicious anemia, and other autoimmune disorders like alopecia areata and vitiligo, the body undergoes melanin deficiency, and thus, the hair grows white.
According to Ayurveda, the most common causes of premature graying of hair are Aharaj, Viharaj, Mansik, genetics, hormones, chemicals, and medical conditions.
