Jaundice

Jaundice is a condition where the skin and the whites of the eyes take on a yellow tint. According to Modern Science Jaundice is not a disease but a common liver problem. It is caused due to the presence of a bile pigment called bilirubin at very high levels in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow-colored waste product that remains in the bloodstream once iron is removed from the hemoglobin.

As per Ayurveda Jaundice is called Kamala. In Ayurvedic Classics, it is described as a pitta predominant disorder. Due to the accumulation of pitta in the body (bilirubin), the body changed to dry and shows symptoms like the yellow color of the nail, yellow color in conjunctive and skin, burning sensation, frog-like yellow color of the body, weakness, indigestion, and anorexia. Some of the food items like oily, spicy, sour, salty, alkaline, and very hot foods, alcohol, and sesame oil cause Pitta aggravation. The aggravated Pitta then impairs the blood and the muscle tissue of the liver, causing the blockage in the channels of the liver and thus Pitta (in the form of bile) is thrown back into the blood leading to discoloration of the eyes and skin.

Ayurveda is a holistic approach that provides an effective remedy to cure jaundice. It includes herbal medicines, diet, and lifestyle plans along with some home remedies prescribed by the efficient Ayurvedic doctor.

Types Of Jaundice

There are three main types of jaundice namely

  • Pre-Hepatic Jaundice

Pre-hepatic jaundice is caused by an excess of bilirubin production, which outnumbers the liver's ability to conjugate the bilirubin and excrete it into the intestine. The most common cause of pre-hepatic jaundice is hemolytic anemia, which results from excessive heme breakdown.

  • Hepatocellular Jaundice

It occurs when bilirubin is unable to leave the liver cells and cannot be removed from the body by the kidneys. Hepatocellular jaundice is usually caused by liver failure, liver disease (cirrhosis), hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), or by taking certain types of medication.

  • Post Hepatic Jaundice

It happens when bilirubin can't be drained properly into the bile ducts or digestive tract because of a blockage. The most common causes of post-hepatic jaundice are gallstones, hard calcium deposits in the gallbladder that can block bile ducts.

Jaundice can be classified into 3 types. They are pre-hepatic, hepatocellular, and post-hepatic jaundice.
