Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a health condition in which the immune system of the body attacks its tissues. Multiple sclerosis is a condition where an insulating Myelin sheath that covers and protects the nerve fibers of the brain and spinal cord is damaged. Under this condition, the central nervous system disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system like the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord. Symptoms can include numbness, paralysis, fatigue, dizziness, emotional instability, memory problems, chronic pain, and vision impairment. Multiple sclerosis typically affects people between the ages of 20 and 40, and women outnumber men by a factor of two.

According to Ayurveda, multiple sclerosis occurs due to the imbalance of Vata dosha. Multiple Sclerosis is termed as Kapha roga in Ayurveda.

Types Of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis can be generally of four types.

  • Relapsing-Remitting MS (RRMS)

Most people with MS are initially diagnosed with Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis. People in the age group of 20 to 30 years are mostly affected with RRMS. RRMS generally lasts anywhere from 24 hours to several weeks.

  • Secondary-Progressive MS (SPMS)

In SPMS, the disability worsens steadily over time without intermittent recovery.

  • Primary-Progressive MS (PPMS)

PPMS is a peculiar type of MS. PPMS is the stage where brain and nerve function worsen without notable periods of remission and relapse.

  • Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS)

Only 5% of people suffer from PRMS. PRMS steadily worsens from the beginning, with acute exacerbations.

Four types of Multiple sclerosis are Relapsing-Remitting MS(RRMS), Secondary-Progressive MS (SPMS), Primary-Progressive MS (PPMS), and Progressive-Relapsing MS (PRMS).
