Kashaya Dhara

Ayurveda is an alternative medicinal system that originated in India. Ayurveda is deep-rooted in our culture and tradition. Ayurvedic treatments have widespread acceptance across the world.

Kashaya Dhara is a classical Ayurvedic treatment used to treat various skin, muscle, and hair problems.' Kashaya' means 'medicated decoction 'and ' dhara' means' pouring'. Hence, kashaya dhara is the procedure of pouring medicated oil in a rhythmic flow on the body. Herbal oils, buttermilk, and medicated milk are the ingredients of decoction.

The oil is poured all over the body for a particular period from a specific height. The herbal oils are rich in anti-allergic and antiseptic properties.

The decoction is then rhythmically rubbed on the body. The oil enters skin pores and ensures a calming effect on the body and mind.

The Procedure Of Kashaya Dhara

Kashaya dhara involves three stages; Purva karma, pradhan karma, and paschat karma.

Purvakarma

The first and foremost step before any treatment is a consultation with an expert physician. The physician will understand the Prakriti (body type) and select the quality of kashayam based on it.

Pradhana Karma

  • The kashaya dhara starts with a gentle oil massage.
  • The patient has to lay in the supine position (lying horizontally with the face and torso facing up). The kashayam poured from a certain height.
  • A gentle massage of the body is done while pouring kashayam.
  • The process will continue for 40-45 minutes.

Paschat Karma

  • After kashaya dhara, the patient has to rest for a while.
  • Hair also should wash in medicinal water.

The three stages of Kashaya dhara are Purva karma, pradhan karma, and paschat karma.


Duration Of Kashaya Dhara

Usually, kashaya dhara takes 40-45 minutes. After the kashaya dhara, the patient has to bathe in lukewarm water.
