Dandruff

Dandruff is a skin condition that primarily affects the scalp. Dandruff occurs when small bits of dry skin are shed from the scalp. It also makes your scalp itchy. The factors that lead to developing dandruff are a person’s age, stress levels, weather, medical conditions, choice of hair products, allergic reactions, psoriasis, and dermatitis.

According to Ayurveda, Dandruff is called Darunaka. It is under the category of Kshudra Rogas (minor diseases). The reasons for developing dandruff are the imbalance of tridosha in the body. The most significant doshas to cause dandruff are Kapha and Vata dosha. When Kapha and Vata doshas are in an aggravated state, both doshas cause the production of specific impurities, called ama. The nature of ama is dry and heated. These impurities accumulate in the deep tissues of the scalp and contaminate them. Contamination of the deep tissues and aggravated Vata-Pitta Dosha cause itching and patches on the scalp. Because of these factors, the scalp sheds more than usual amounts of dead epidermal cells, which leads to dandruff.
