Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is the swelling or inflammation of the gallbladder. It happens when a digestive juice called bile gets trapped in your gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ under your liver. It stores bile which is made in the liver. Usually, bile drains out of your gallbladder and into your small intestine. If the bile is blocked, it builds up in your gallbladder. It causes inflammation and can cause infection. Other causes of cholecystitis include bile duct problems, tumors, serious illness, and certain infections.


Types Of Cholecystitis

There are two types of cholecystitis

  • Acute cholecystitis

    It is a sudden inflammation of the gallbladder that causes marked abdominal pain, often with nausea, vomiting, and fever.

  • Chronic cholecystitis

    It's a low-intensity gallbladder inflammation that lasts a lengthy time. Repeated occurrences of acute cholecystitis may be the cause. Chronic cholecystitis might cause modest stomach pain that comes and goes or no symptoms at all.

Acute cholecystitis and Chronic cholecystitis are the two types of cholecystitis.


Symptoms Of Cholecystitis

Symptoms of cholecystitis include:

  • Intense, sudden pain in the upper right part of your belly.
  • Pain (often worse with deep breaths) that spreads to your back or below the right shoulder blade.
  • Tenderness in your abdomen when it's touched.
  • Abdominal pain and cramping after eating – especially fatty foods.

Causes Of Cholecystitis

The most common causes are when a digestive juice called bile gets trapped in your gallbladder.

Other causes of cholecystitis include:

  • Injury to the abdomen from burns, sepsis, trauma, or because of surgery.
  • Shock.
  • Immune deficiency.
  • Prolonged fasting.
  • Vasculitis.
  • Bacterial infection in the bile duct system.
  • Reduced blood supply to the gallbladder.
  • Gallbladder sludge.

Ayurveda Treatment For Cholecystitis

Ayurveda treatment for Cholecystitis consisted of mild purgation (mridu virechana) with trivrit lehyam for consecutive seven days, followed by oral administration of Tab Liv 52, Bhunimbadi Kadha twice daily, and Amalaki Rasayana in the morning for 45 days. A therapeutic diet was administered to treat the symptoms.

Diet Recommendations

It is important to make dietary adjustments that help bring bile production back to normal. Below mentioned diet help to treat the symptoms of Cholecystitis:

Foods to be taken

  • Vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, spinach, beets, potatoes, and cucumber.
  • Pasta.
  • Plain yogurt.
  • Fresh fruits such as plums, figs, cantaloupe, and watermelons.
  • Low-fat dairy products such as cottage cheese.
  • Whole-grain foods such as whole-wheat bread, oats, bran cereal.
  • Nuts like walnuts and almonds.
  • Lentils.
  • Drink plenty of water, juices (except grape and apples).
Foods to be avoided
  • Red meat (pork, duck, lamb), Eggs, Fried Foods, spicy foods, Chocolate and ice cream, Beverages like carbonated drinks, coffee, or black tea.
  • Vegetables such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, beans, cauliflower, and cucumbers.
  • Fruits such as bananas, apricots, peaches, and apples.
  • Dairy products like milk, ice cream, and cheese.

Lifestyle Changes

It is important to follow these lifestyle changes to prevent Cholecystitis:

  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Choose a healthy diet.
  • Exercise regularly. It helps to prevent gallstones in both men and women. Walking, cycling, swimming, etc are very effective.
  • Practice Yoga Asanas such as Sarvangasana, Paschim-Tasmania, Shalabhasana, Dhanurasana and Bhujangasana.

Herbal Remedies For Cholecystitis

The herbal remedies to cure the symptoms of Cholecystitis include:

  • Turmeric

    Turmeric is well-known for its excellent choleretic as well as anti-inflammatory properties, due to curcumin compounds. Having some warm milk infused with turmeric after meals at night assists in liquifying bile fluids, ridding gallstones from bile ducts, and significantly improves digestion, liver health.

  • Aloe Vera

    Aloe vera is an effective remedy to cure gallbladder inflammation. It has a powerful cholagogue that cleanses the gallbladder of stones. As per Ayurveda consuming aloe vera juice regularly is a proven natural remedy for gallstones.

  • Gokshura

    Gokshura consists of several bioactive elements such as alkaloids, phytosterols that work defectively in healing gallstones, liver and kidney problems, urinary tract disorders, etc. Gokshura Churna is efficiently detoxifying the gallbladder.

  • Kalonji

    Kalonji or Nigella sativa is an effective remedy for gallbladder inflammation and is also used for gallstones. It contains antioxidant thymoquinone, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. Mixing kalonji seeds with honey, kalonji, or black seed oil and warm water and drinking this tonic on an empty stomach help in dissolving gallstones. .

  • Black Pepper

    Black Pepper has medicinal qualities such as choleretic components that regulate bile secretions and enhance the functioning of the liver, gallbladder. Consuming some black pepper powder with warm water before meals promotes digestion, balances cholesterol, and dispels gallstones.
