Ashoka
Ashoka is an important Ayurveda herb used mainly in bleeding gynecological conditions. Saraca asoca or Saraca indica is the scientific name of Ashoka and it belongs to the Caesalpinioideae family. Ashoka, known as the Ashoka briksh is one of the most ancient, sacred trees found all over India and is widely seen in Khasi, Bengal, Orissa, Assam, and South region. Ashoka requires strong sunshine, proper rainfall with organic soil for the proper growth and development. The plant is usually 10 to 12 m tall and has broad branches. It has compound, paripinnate (leaflets are borne in pairs), drooping, dark-green colored leaves. The flowers are arranged in clusters and are orange, orange-yellow, or white.
According to Ayurveda, Ashoka is useful in controlling internal bleeding, especially in the case of piles due to its Kashaya (astringent) property. Asoka has various medicinal properties, especially its bark and leaves. The main medicinal properties of Asoka are:
- Anti-diabetic
The flower of Ashoka contains Flavonoids. These flavonoids help the function of certain enzymes that are effective for the absorption of glucose.

The bark of the Asoka contains compounds like Flavonoids, gallic acid, and phenolic compounds. These compounds prevent the increase of cancer cells and cause cancer cell death.

Dosage Of Ashoka

- Asoka Tablet
Use 1-2 tablets twice a day after meals.
- Asoka Kwatha
Take 8-10 teaspoons of Asoka kwatha. Add the same quantity of water and drink it after meals.
Side Effects
There have been no reports of any side effects when consumed at the right proportion. But overdose of Asoka can lead to constipation. So use only after the consultation with your physician.
Precautions
It should be used in pregnancy, lactation, and children only after consultation with a physician. Heart Patients should use only under medical supervision.
