Dronapushpi
Dronapushpi is an ancient Ayurvedic herb that grows as a weed in India and many Southeast Asian countries. The scientific name of Dronapushpi is Leucas cephalotes and comes from the Lamiaceae family. It is called Dronapushpi because the flower resembles the shape of Droni (ship). The plant is yellowish-green in colour and exhibits white sessile flowers. It is used as a traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the treatment of respiratory disorders like asthma, cough, fever, cold, liver disorders, scorpion bite, snake bites, jaundice, etc.
According to ancient Ayurvedic books, two types of Dronapushpi can be seen. They are Dronapushpi (Leucas aspera) and Maha Drona (Leucas cephalotes). The chemical composition of Dronapushpi includes Laballenic acid, β-sitosterol, Oleanolic acid, 7-Oxo Stigmasterol, 7-Oxo Sitosterol, 7-alpha hydroxy stigmasterol, pillion, tricin, Cosmosin, Anisofolin A, luteolin, etc.
Ancient scriptures like Charaka Samhita and Susrutha Samhita describe a lot of diseases that can be cured by the use of Dronapushpi. It is used for Rasayana(rejuvenating the whole body), treats anemia, tuberculosis, prevents aging, useful in fever, improves breathing, relieves cough, breathing difficulties, burning sensation, and also relieves excessive thirst.
