Immunity in Ayurveda is known by the word Vyadishamathva. It means the capacity of the body to prevent diseases and quickly recover from diseases. The immune system evolved as a defence system to protect animals from invading microorganisms and malignant disorders. Vyadhiksamatva implies resistance against the loss of the integrity, proportion, and interrelationship amongst the individual’s bioenergies (doshas) and tissues (dhatus).
According to Ayurveda, strong immunity is a product of good digestion, strong Agni (the metabolic fire), quality liver functioning, and a balanced endocrine system. Immunity is also very much connected to a mysterious substance called Ojas.
Immunity is of two types. Innate immunity protects the host against infection but has no 'memory', and so gives no long-term immunity. The second type is adaptive immunity, which does have a kind of 'memory'. It does give long-term protection against specific pathogens.
As per Ayurveda, maintaining the balance of Tridoshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the way to nurture and maintain a healthy immune system. So Ayurveda offers several herbs, diet, medicines, exercises, etc to improve one’s immunity to the body.
The food we eat can be broadly categorized into Sattvik, Rajasic, and Tamasic food. Sattvik Aahar or vegetarian food is considered the best for the body.
