Introduction

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common infection that affects both men and women. But the women tend to suffer more because of their anatomy. The space between the anus and the urethral opening is shorter in women as compared to men.

The urinary tract needs absolute hygiene and health to stay away from diseases. Ayurveda says that UTI symptoms are -exhibited during the vitiation of pitta dosha in the body. So the treatment and diet should be satisfying pitta.


Types Of Urinary Tract Infections

An infection can happen in different parts of our urinary tract. Each has a different name, based on where it is. They are,

  • Cystitis

  • Pyalonephritis

  • Urethritis

    ( Urethra) This can cause a discharge and burning when you urinate.

Symptoms Of UTI's In Ladies

Symptoms of UTI include:

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Increased frequency of urination
  • Cloudy or dark urine
  • Signs of blood in the urine
  • Feeling tired
  • Fever or chills
  • Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen

Causes Of UTI's

  • UTI typically occurs when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and begin to multiply in the bladder. Some women are more likely to get UTIs because of their genes.
  • Conditions such as diabetes, bowel incontinence, kidney stones, immobility, reduced intake of fluids, and pregnancy can also contribute to Urinary Tract Infection.
  • Increased intake of sour, salty, bitter, oily, spicy, and fried foods and tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages aggravate Pitta (Fire) in the body, which leads to the condition of UTI. Working in the sun or hot weather and excessive physical effort increases the infection.

Precautions To Prevent UTI's

Ayurveda mentions various kinds of preventive measures as well as treatment.

Ayurveda recommends proper rehydration of the body and absolute hygiene.

  • Take a bath daily and wipe the body with a dry towel.
  • Wash after urination and wipe properly.
  • Do not allow sweat to enter the vaginal and pelvic regions.
  • Do not wear wet undergarments.
  • Women should change napkins regularly during menstruation.
  • Always try to use hot and fresh food.
  • Follow the daily regimen and seasonal regimen mentioned in Ayurveda, which provides elaborate measures for proper body health by maintaining absolute hygiene.
  • Drink at least 1.5 liters of freshwater a day.
  • Urinate frequently. Do not hold urine as it will lead to infections.
  • Maintain proper environmental health.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies For Uti

  • Boil barley grains in a liter of water. Stain and drink 8-10 glasses of this water a day.
  • Drink a glass of plantain pith / green beans juice first thing in the morning every day.
  • Drink coconut water every day.
  • Boil water with Jeera (Cumin) seeds and drink after meals.
  • Wash your private parts with water boiled with Triphala powder.

Diet & Lifestyle

Ayurveda suggests a diet that will promote urination and relieve vitiated doshas which resulted in UTI. Drinking sufficient quantities of water should become a habit. This will help in eliminating bacteria from the body.

  • Wear cotton and loose-fitting inner wear and clothing.
  • Use dry clothes after a bath.
  • Women should follow good personal hygiene practices, especially during menstrual periods. The habit should be developed to wipe from front to back after defecation.
  • Bhujangasana, Surya namaskar, Dhanurasana, and similar procedures can stimulate and preserve the health of the genito-urinary system.
